Aaron Rodriguez

Embracing Radical Change for Personal Fulfillment

As with several other interviewees, I met Aaron while he was working with one of Visier’s customers and I was doing customer stories. I noticed Aaron more, however, as I thought about doing redirecting research because he had shared on LinkedIn a pivot from the people analytics space to becoming a career coach and I wanted to know what his drivers were. He was one of my first interviews. I actually needed to do two interviews with him. He commented on some of my early research sharing, that contrary to my post – that interviewees over 50 frequently talked about “having fun” and those younger did not, that he definitely was having fun and it was an important part of any pivot. So, he’s a two-time interviewee and you’ll see the joy that comes through with his pivot story.

The Catalyst for Change

Aaron’s journey started in a goal-oriented, high-pressure environment focused on money and promotions. Although he achieved financial comfort, he realized he didn’t love the life he was living. Always measured by his success with salary and promotions, he longed for something more meaningful as well as less stressful. This realization sparked his desire for radical change, moving away from incremental adjustments.

Driven by a passion for helping others, Aaron envisioned a career where he could make a difference. In another life, he imagined being a therapist, but for now, he settled on career coaching. Financial stability provided the foundation for this transition, enabling him to explore this new direction without the immediate pressure of financial insecurity.

A New Direction

Aaron’s new path is a blend of his professional expertise and personal passion. Currently working at Capitol Bridge as their Director of Total Rewards, People Analytics, and HRIS, he balances this with his call to coaching which is about bringing out the best in people, especially those who lack confidence. His mission is clear: helping people get what they deserve. Whether it's helping someone recognize their self-worth or guiding them through a career transition, Aaron is dedicated to making a positive impact by helping them get what they want.

Advice for Successful Pivots

Aaron’s advice for those looking to pivot their careers is both practical and insightful:

  1. Embrace Radical Change: Incremental changes can fall short. To achieve success, consider making bold, dramatic shifts that can lead to more significant and fulfilling results.

  2. Find Joy in Your Work: Assess what brings you joy and align your career with these elements. Joy and meaning give purpose to your work and life.

  3. Financial Stability: Ensure you have a financial foundation before making a significant career change. This stability allows you to explore new directions without undue stress.

  4. Commit Fully: Once you decide on a new direction, commit to it fully. Hold yourself accountable and dedicate yourself to your new path.

  5. Use Technology Wisely: Tools like Calendly and AI transcription services can streamline your processes. Use technology to manage your time effectively and maintain organization.

  6. Reflect and Assess: Regularly take time to reflect on your career and personal goals. Ask yourself if you like where you are and if your work aligns with your values.

  7. Avoid Unnecessary Expenses: When starting a new venture, be mindful of expenses. Aaron learned that he didn’t really need an expensive website. Focus on what truly adds value to your business.

  8. Network and Learn: Building a network and continually learning are crucial. Aaron found LinkedIn posts more effective for building his coaching business than a website. Engage with your community and share your insights.
