From Corporate Stagnation to Consulting Success
Lisa and I have crossed paths many times over the years, through IHRIM, HR Tech, and People Analytics. At one point, Lisa graciously completed the SierraCedar HR Systems Survey, and her thoughtful approach to her work has always impressed me. When she reached out to share her experience with career pivots, I knew her story would offer valuable insights.

The Catalyst for Change
Lisa’s career has been marked by four significant pivots, the most transformative being her shift from corporate life to consulting. After 23 years of marriage, she found herself divorced at 50, a turning point that prompted her to reassess her life and career.
She was also dealing with a nano manager at work, which made her feel stifled and eager for change. Lisa had already implemented analytics and integrated systems like Employee Central, so she decided to take a leap into consulting—an environment that would allow her to spread her wings.
A New Direction: Thriving as a Solution Architect
Today, Lisa is a successful solution architect, having doubled her income since making the switch. Her role involves implementing HR software across various clients, each with its unique challenges, which keeps her work dynamic and fulfilling. Consulting allows her to contribute to HR transformation on a broader scale, something she deeply values.
One of the most significant lessons Lisa has learned is the importance of self-confidence. Coming from a toxic work environment, she had to overcome hesitancy and fear of asking questions. In consulting, she realized that asking for help isn’t a weakness but a strength. This shift in mindset empowered her to own her expertise and thrive in her new role.
Advice for Successfully Pivoting
Lisa’s journey from corporate stagnation to consulting success offers several key pieces of advice:
1. Embrace Continuous Learning: Consulting requires ongoing education. Lisa emphasizes the need to stay current in your field, as she recertifies every year to maintain her edge.
2. Set Boundaries: Lisa initially underestimated what a day in the life of a consultant was and what was needed. She had to assess time expectations to avoid the “road warrior” lifestyle common in consulting. She quickly learned the importance of setting boundaries to manage her time effectively and avoid burnout.
3. Accept Imperfection: At 60, Lisa has learned to give herself permission to be imperfect. This mindset has allowed her to grow and explore new aspects of her creativity.
4. Prioritize Your Own Needs: Lisa advises others to prioritize what they want over what others expect. This focus has been empowering, helping her stay true to her goals and desires.
5. Build a Supportive Community: Reconnecting with her spiritual side, Lisa returned to church to meet new people and build a community, which has been vital in her journey.
Conclusion
Lisa’s story is a testament to the power of taking bold steps to create a fulfilling career. By embracing continuous learning, setting boundaries, and accepting imperfection, Lisa has crafted a successful consulting career that challenges and satisfies her. Her advice to prioritize your needs and seek out a supportive community offers valuable guidance for anyone considering a major life pivot.
